Trichomoniasis
What is trichomoniasis?
It is a parasitic disease that causes inflammation and infection of the vagina.
What causes it?
Trichomoniasis is caused by a flagellated protozoan that infects the vagina, Skene’s ducts and lower urinary tract in women and lower genitourinary tract in men. It is transmitted by sexual intercourse (sexual contact).
SYMPTOMS
It is characterized by foul-smelling greenish discharge, itching, vaginal redness accompanied by diffuse edematous papillae in severe cases.The diagnosis is established by finding organisms with flagella moving microscopic examination of a swab on a saline wet preparation.
It is sometimes possible to find organisms in the first sample of morning urine of infected men.
TREATMENT AND RECOMMENDATIONS
In all diseases through sexual contact, is necessary to treat the sexual partner at a time.
Recommended for trichomoniasis metronidazole, 2 grams a day in two doses, or 250 mg 3 times daily for a week. In resistant cases, increasing the treatment time to 14 days or 2 gr. Daily for 5 days.
It’s good to douche daily with a solution containing 4 tablespoons vinegar and two drops of shampoo in a gallon of water.
We should not use metronidazole during the first trimester of pregnancy and men should use condoms during intercourse for the duration of treatment.
