If you experience heartburn every day. There are certain tips that can help reduce this discomfort.

* Avoid eating too much at meals, the more volume you have the stomach, stomach contents will be directed more upwards. Try to eat four or five small meals instead of two or three large ones.

* Do not eat foods high in fat because they tend to remain in the stomach longer.

* Do not smoke and avoid alcohol before, during and after a meal that you think will cause heartburn.

* Chew gum (not mint) after meals to stimulate saliva production, as the bicarbonate in the saliva neutralizes the acid.

* Drink a small glass of water after meals to help dilute and wash any stomach acid that may be in the esophagus.

* Eat a diet high in fiber. A recent study found that people who follow this system are 20% less likely to suffer symptoms of heartburn.
