Hazardous Ingredients in Cosmetics: Phthalates and Phenyl Phenol
Phthalates
Phthalates are softeners and solvents that can be too easily found in creams, nail polish, perfumes, hairsprays and deodorants. And that the European Parliament banned its use-from Jan. 1, in the manufacture of toys that can be mouthed and childcare articles as they are associated with damage to the reproductive and endocrine systems as well as an increased risk of asthma and cancer.
At least that has in some studies, for example, by the University of Rochester (USA), which states that exposure to these chemicals is also linked to an increased risk of genital abnormalities in baby boys. Well, there are six types of phthalates can not be used as or in the manufacture of toys for safety reasons but can be found in various cosmetics.
Check labels and avoid them, especially the three first ones mentioned. We speak of dietilhexiloftalato (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), the butilbenzilftalato (BBP), the di-iso (DINP), the diisodeciloftalato (DIDP) and dinoctilftalato (DNOP).
Phenyl phenol
Phenol and phenyl are substances used as disinfectants in the field of medicine and as preservatives in the cosmetic industry. In the case of phenol, for example, should know that this is an alcohol produced by partial oxidation of benzene which makes it a toxic ingredient that can affect the central nervous system, heart, liver, kidney and skin. Nitropheno, phenolphthalein or chlorophenol are just some of the names under which they may appear. As for the phenyl, which often included in cosmetics under the name of phenylenediamine sulfate-absorbed through the skin, enter the bloodstream and can cause liver problems.
These alcohols are incorporated into products of all kinds but especially in mouthwash. In fact, some contain more alcohol than beer, wine and liquor (for example, known Listerine contains 21.6% alcohol and therefore in the container contained a warning label). Label, however, does not appear in hair sprays, many of which 95% of its composition usually be ethyl alcohol. Well, you know that when you rinse your mouth with them the alcohol acts as a solvent and makes the tissue more vulnerable to suffer from various ailments, including cancer.
At least some studies show they performed. The data leave no doubt: the men who normally use mouthwashes that contain 25% alcohol have a 60% chance of cancer of the mouth or throat than non-users. For women this risk is 90%.
